Two Adventures, One Mountain Escape: Capon Springs & Mack’s Bingo Kitchen

I spent the day at a golf tournament at Capon Springs, and on the way home, I made a detour through the tiny town of Wardensville. Tiny maybe, but full of character. My first stop was the local bakery, picking up fresh produce and baked goods, when a bright sign caught my eye: Mack’s Bingo: West Virginia Restaurant of the Year. Well, that’s a pretty bold claim, and sometimes you just have to go with bold.

Walking in, I was greeted by a polite woman at the door who turned out to be the manager. Somehow, we got talking about Woodstock Cafe back in my hometown, and it turns out the owner of Mack’s used to cook there. Small world, right? The vibe inside is pure West Virginia country food – warm, welcoming, and somewhere between brand new and 100 years old all at once. High ceilings and an open floor plan make it easy to settle in, look around, and appreciate the details.

I had my eyes set on the burger and potatoes (double-cooked, naturally), though the Strawberry Rhubarb pie on the menu made me pause. The waitress was friendly and encouraged me to take photos, which only made me appreciate the space more. People watching quickly turned into a conversation with the couple next to me, who shared insider tips on what to come back for on future visits. By the time the food arrived, it was clear – the kitchen cared. The presentation alone was tempting, and the smell made the first bite irresistible.

But the day wasn’t just about food. Capon Springs itself is a gem just over the mountain from Strasburg or a short drive from Winchester. Nine spectacular holes, played twice for a full round, wind through forests and mountains with breathtaking views for miles. If you stay at Capon, there’s family-style dining, fireworks on the Fourth of July, stargazing, a spring-fed swimming pool, a spa, pickleball, badminton, disc golf, and more. Friendly staff make it easy to enjoy everything without worry.

Pairing Capon Springs with Mack’s Bingo Kitchen makes for a day – or a weekend – that hits all the right notes: outdoor adventure, history, breathtaking scenery, hearty food, and a welcoming small-town charm. Both are experiences you’ll want to repeat, year after year.

So, next time you’re in the Valley, do yourself a favor. Tee it up at Capon Springs, then cross the mountain to Wardensville and settle in at Mack’s. Two adventures, one unforgettable escape.
