David Johns arrived at Heritage Oaks Golf Course on September 25, 2001, four days before the course opened, the same year First Tee’s Harrisonburg chapter was founded. Programming began in 2002, and in those early years, David managed both the golf course and the First Tee program as the latter got rolling.

The early setup was simple—donated land, a three-hole course, a putting green, and a classroom building—and its goal was clear: use golf to teach life skills, build character, and help kids gain confidence and maturity.

Community support proved critical in getting the program established. Big names like Cecil Gilkerson and Larry Rogers got involved early, throwing their weight behind the new initiative. Mike Lehman became instrumental in its continued growth, even spearheading a new First Tee facility in 2009 which included heated hitting bays, classrooms, equipment space, and offices. The location remains one of the more complete facilities in the country.

Today, First Tee operates across the Shenandoah Valley under the leadership of Jarrett Hatcher. Jarrett and David have known each other for nearly 30 years, dating back to their time working together at Massanutten Resort. Before becoming executive director, Jarrett volunteered with First Tee while coaching basketball and golf at Robert E. Lee High School.

The program remains consistent in its community-focused approach, teaching nine core values, providing mentorship, and fostering an environment where kids can learn and grow. Scholarships help ensure access for those who may not otherwise be able to participate.

For David and Jarrett, the greatest reward is hearing First Tee students’ stories as they come back years later—with families, careers, and well-earned happiness—ready to pay it forward to the next generation.
