All my life, I’ve been captivated by photographs—and their underlying stories. I found this one at an auction and was immediately intrigued. “Rooney” sported cool shades, bobbed hair, penny loafers, and a stylish skirt, but who was this young woman at the range? And how did she get started golfing?
From the handwritten caption, I presume she was “warming up” to play a round…perhaps with the elderly gentleman behind her. Was he her father? Did he teach her the game? The background cars and clothing styles suggest the picture was taken in the ‘40s or ‘50s. Is there a chance Rooney is still alive? When did she last swing that 7-iron?
BoBirdie is more than just a golf magazine; it’s a collaborative celebration of this game we all love. Like Rooney on the range, Issue #1 is just us “warming up,” opening the door to even grander ventures—but I can’t do it alone. In the spirit of storytelling, and honoring all the Shenandoah Valley’s characters and quirks, I invite you to share your photos, stories, and ideas. Together, let’s celebrate all the “Rooneys” of the Valley, rediscovering our passion for golf while fostering powerful new friendships along the way.
